A few years back Don Martines was at YMCA Camp Pendalouan and noticed that the swim platform needed repairs. He jumped into action and had the platform inspected, which showed it was time for a replacement. Don purchased a new platform and went on to also sponsor its installation. The unveiling of the new platform took place at Camp Pendalouan’s 100 Year Celebration. Don’s generosity ensures that kids at Pendalouan can continue to enjoy the waterfront on Big Blue Lake for many years to come.

Don has served on and off on the Muskegon YMCA board and other Y committees for about 25 years now. He now serves on the Y board, finance committee, and Camp Pendalouan committee.

“I feel so blessed in my life and for as long as I can remember felt a need to give back to my community. In my early years, I gave through time and talent, and now later in my life, I have some ability to give through treasures as well. I love the YMCA and Camp Pendalouan as it represents a great way to give so much to our community and especially our youth. Now more than ever, our young need the camp experience.”

In addition to serving on our board, Don also volunteers his time as a Livestrong with the Muskegon YMCA coach where he supports cancer survivors in reclaiming their strength through exercise.

Along with his service for the Y, Don has also served over the years with the Lions Club, the Arc Muskegon, the St. Francis de Sales finance committee, the St. Mary’s cemetery board, the City of Norton Shores, as well as the Seaway Run and the Run for Wings committees. He also volunteers at his church as a collection counter and as a Eucharistic minister.

“I believe serving your community is so rewarding for the soul, it is what we are supposed to do with our lives, Love God, and Love our neighbor. I have heard it said that the only things that we will take into Heaven are those that we gave away during our life. It’s like what is engraved on the fireplace in the Camp dining hall, “God first, others second and I’m third”.”

We are endlessly grateful for Don. His dedication to our community and giving spirit reaches far and wide and has impacted countless lives. Thank you, Don, for all that you do.
