Beth, one of our newest instructors with our Muskegon YMCA Safety Around Water program, has already made waves with her compassionate, creative approach to teaching. While working with a group of students with special needs from a local school, Beth quickly took initiative to ensure they felt supported every step of the way.

Understanding that new environments can feel overwhelming, Beth began visiting the students in their classroom the day before each swim session—bringing flashcards, life jackets, and a calm, reassuring presence. “I enjoy using adaptive strategies to help children overcome a fear of water,” she shares, “and to see the child’s delight in learning a new skill.”

This extra effort has made a real difference. Students arrive at the pool more comfortable and confident, and more are eager to participate in lessons. “I go above and beyond because I believe every child deserves to be taught water safety skills,” Beth says. “If a child remembers one life-saving skill I have taught that saves his or her life, then my extra time was well spent.”

Her commitment to creating safe, joyful learning experiences embodies what our Safety Around Water program is all about. Learn more about Safety Around Water at muskegonymca.org/safety-around-water/ and get involved with the program at muskegonymca.org/get-involved/.
